Nick Silver

Director

Nick Silver is an actuary (Fellow of the UK Institute of Actuaries) and economist, specialising in pensions and social insurance. His expertise includes pensions policy and reform; the interaction of countries’ demography, social security system and economy; the application of social insurance to manage climate risks; design and application of actuarial computer simulation models for the analysis of pension and other social security systems and training in these areas. Nick has advised a number of developing and transition economy countries on social insurance and pensions reform. This includes developing a model and advising on reform for the Abu Dhabi Pension Fund, valuing and advising on reform for the pioneering Jigawa State Pension Fund, modelling, reform options and capacity building for the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund in FYR Macedonia, an organisational review of the Pension Insurance Funds in Bosnia-Herzegovina, actuarial advice to the Bank of Uganda, modelling of parametric reforms in Georgia, and modelling and policy advice for British Overseas Territories. Nick led a major international cross-border analysis of pensions systems and reform options. Nick is currently working on harmonising the pensions systems of CARICOM countries. Nick is Chairman of the Resource and Environment Group of the UK actuarial profession and a representative of the Carbon Disclosure Project. Nick is a senior honorary visiting fellow at Cass Business School, a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics  and a fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs. Nick led a major research project for the Institute of Economic Affairs on a cross-country comparison of pensions and social security arrangements. His subsequent paper on the UK’s implicit pensions debt received widespread publicity formed the basis of a Channel 4 documentary.
